Elden Ring Takes the Game of the Year Crown: Barely Beats The Last of Us Part II’s Record in 2020

Despite its contentious title, there’s no doubting that The Last of Us Part II was a commercial and critical triumph for Sony and Naughty Dog. It also established a record for the most Game of the Year accolades for any video game, receiving 322 from various award shows and websites. Neil Druckmann and his team probably assumed the record would be safe for at least a few more years, but FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has already surpassed it.

It wasn’t easy, to be sure. Elden Ring received 323 Game of the Year honors in all, just surpassing The Last of Us Part II by a single award, according to a ResetEra forum post that counts Game of the Year winners. That number might rise if new Game of the Year lists for 2022 are discovered and added to the tally.

If there was going to be a game to dethrone The Last of Us Part II, it had to be Elden Ring. Elden Ring, like its opponent, has not only been a critical darling but has also exceeded sales forecasts across the board, becoming one of the best-selling games of all time in the United States in just four months.

It also won Game of the Year at the Game Awards in December, defeating two of Sony’s big 2022 releases, Horizon Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok. With 74 Game of the Year awards in 2022, the latter has taken second place. However, its predecessor, 2018’s God of War, got 263 Game of the Year nominations, placing it fourth behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s 283 nominations. It begs the question of whether God of War: Ragnarok would have dominated the awards season if Elden Ring hadn’t debuted the same year.
